Mixtape Monday: The Battle at D. Jose

If you’ve been following me on Snapchat (shameless plug: @jhanzey LOL), then you’ve seen my frequent snaps at LRT, crying for help. Every day is a battlefield, and by the time that I arrive at work, I’m already sweaty AF, looking miserable like I would rather stay at home than go to anywhere elseΒ (which sometimes proves to be to true).

Anyway, my daily route is to take a jeep going to Monumento, then catch the train to Doroteo Jose, and then take another train going to Gilmore. It sounds tiresome because IT IS, and I would usually find myself swearing under my breath after I alight the train at Gilmore. LRT 2 is tolerable, but LRT 1 (Monumento to Doroteo Jose) is HELL. Every morning, I would have to squeeze my way inside the crowded compartments, and then suffer from being suffocated by fellow women fighting for a space inside the jampacked train. By the time that I am supposed to go home, I would also find myself pushing some people, hoping to get in with the obviously overflowing crowd inside, and then pray to God that I would FINALLY get home safe.

Needless to say, every single day is a battlefield at LRT 1, and I would gladly trade everything just for a better commute (or better yet, a possibility of working from home). So for today, I’ve decided to post a compilation of songs that would best describe my struggles. Sharing my playlist for those people who might find themselves experiencing the same thing every Monday. Ha ha. Good luck to all of us. May the odds be in our favor.

The Battle at D. Jose

A Commuter’s Playlist

Alive – Temper Trap

The song that we play when we go out of our houses, feeling all positive that we can survive the day

“Yeah it feels so good / so good to be alive”

Radioactive – Imagine Dragons

Finally, you’re starting to realize where you are, and what you’re about to face

“I’m waking up to ash and dust / I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust / I’m breathing in the chemicals*
I’m breaking in, shaping up / then checking out on the prison bus / This is it, the apocalypse

*Chemicals – yes, the mixed odor of your fellow warriors. GO COMMUTERS!!!

R U Mine – Arctic Monkeys

When a skip train comes in and you get a glimpse of all the free seats inside. You look around at your fellow commuters and ask yourself, “dear seat, R U Mine?”

I go crazy ’cause here isn’t where I wanna be* / And satisfaction feels like a distant memory / And I can’t help myself / All I wanna hear her say is are you mine?

*Yep, I don’t want to be in this crowd! I want to be in that free seat, relaxing my way to the next few stations!

Believe – The Bravery

When you feel like you’re losing hope and you need to see that small light at the end of the tunnel so you can keep fighting (a.k.a. you’re late, but you want to fool yourself that you can make it)

“So give me something to believe / Cause I am living just to breathe / And I need something more
To keep on breathing for/ So give me something to believe”

Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked – Cage the Elephant

When you remind yourself why you keep on enduring the shitty commute to work

“Oh, there ain’t no rest for the wicked / Money don’t grow on trees /I got bills to pay
I got mouths to feed / And ain’t nothing in this world for free”

Love Illumination – Franz Ferdinand

When you’re fantasizing about all the money that you’ll get from payday and it quickly fades as you see the hell that you have to go through to get to work

“When you’re happy from a dream / Is it hard to work out what is real”

Let Me In – Grouplove

Begging for your chance to finally get inside the train

“Let me in, yeah, let me get closer / Got me runnin’ wild like I feel it all over”

Tick Tick Boom – The Hives

When you find yourself getting that much-coveted seat inside the train and this is all you can say to that other girl who missed the opportunity…

“I saw your hesitating, waiting too much / ’till it slipped through your hands
and then you stagger to your feet and out the door / ’cause there’s not second chance”

Let’s Dance to Joy Division – The Wombats

When you’re already losing it because of the stress from commuting

” Let’s dance to joy division / And celebrate the irony / Everything is going wrong / But we’re so happy”

Do I Wanna Know – Arctic Monkeys

When you remember your bed and feel the regret of leaving the comforts of your home

Maybe I’m too busy being yours to fall for somebody new* / Now I’ve thought it through / Crawling back to you

*Somebody new = my love for money. I’m sorry, bed.

Evil – Interpol

The title described the commuting life perfectly. This is also how I ask myself when I feel like giving up again…

“Why can’t we just play the other game?* / Why can’t we just look the other way?*”

*Other = Skip work

Smile Like You Mean It – The Killers

When you get at work all tired but you gotta greet your officemates with some positivity…

Hang Me Up to Dry – Cold War Kids

When I finally get in at work and I’m all sweaty

“Now hang me up to dry / You wrung me out too, too, too many times”

Hope you guys like this Monday’s mixtape! Any suggestion for next week? πŸ™‚

  1. Awwww group love and temper trap. <3 Discovered them thru movie OSTs. And yes, LRT1 & MRT really /is/ a battlefield. You come out a Manila Warrior after surviving one ride. Hahaha! But I do hope they find a solution to this soon (or at least, not make it even worse than it is now).

  2. haha~ I feel your pain Jhanz! Actually, I’m getting scared (not to mention, depressed) because I am moving back to Manila soon, and reading this post reminded me so much of how much I hate commuting in Manila~ urgh! I might be working again in Makati and I’m crossing my fingers that I would find a new place that is just walking distance from my work. Otherwise, everyday will be a battlefield for me too! haha~ I salute you, young warrior!

  3. I remember my gruelling days in the road when I lived there but that was so long ago, can’t imagine how worse the commute it has become these days. I admire that you can still write post about it very lightly and come up with a playlist. Enjoyed reading your post girl!

  4. Hello, Jhanz! πŸ™‚

I’ve experienced riding the MRT and LRT 1 during my entire college life. It was really exhausting, especially during the rush hour. I feel so much relieved every time I get to exit from the train! Lol. But good thing you have a playlist to listen to everyday, just be sure to keep your phone safe <3

Hope to hear from you soon! πŸ™‚ Btw, hope you could check out my online business on Instagram or Shopee, @gorgeousglance β™‘
